Academy for Effective Mathematics Teaching & Learning

Enabling Student Success from Middle to High School Mathematics

Join this participant-driven community of practice designed to give math teachers time to work on designing high-quality, effective math instruction. You will get a chance to share challenges and new ideas with colleagues and form a learning community that supports the Teacher Effectiveness Framework. Leave the Academy with research-based instructional strategies and the means to orchestrate effective mathematical conversations in your classroom. The Academy will provide:

  • Current research and strategies for Tier 1 level intervention to close achievement gaps

  • Assistance to elevate teacher practice and promote student engagement

  • New and innovative ideas to help improve not only classroom practice but also your mathematics program

  • better understanding and implementation of both the Kentucky Academic Standards and Standards for Mathematical Practice so that students have an enduring understanding of mathematics

  • Specific ideas to share at PLC meetings and allow for district PD opportunities

Focus Topics:

  • Fostering mathematical mindset to improve the learning culture in the math classroom
  • Research-based cognitive engagement strategies so no student 'opts out' of the learning
  • Creating higher-order, open-ended questions with a focus on Marian Small’s work on open questions and parallel tasks
  • How to foster meaningful mathematical discourse with a focus on NCTM’s 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions
  • How to select and write rigorous mathematical tasks
  • Progression of mathematical content across grade bands

Cost: $800 for returning participants (attended 2016-17; $850 for new participants

The Academy meeting will have grade-band breakout sessions.  Series of 5 meetings in Lexington.
